INTRODUCING KRISTYN Hi, I’m Kristyn Mitchell, the founder and Managing Director of Farmkey LTD, trading as Farmkey Manuals. My partner Chris and I are contract milkers on a small dairy farm near Morrinsville. We raise our three young girls, and milk 180 cows. Now, with Farmkey, I also talk to farmers around New Zealand, and help them write their own customized Farm Manuals, which I publish and present as a complete quality system. MY HISTORY I grew up on dairy farms, and trained as a Microbiologist after school. I worked in laboratories for Fonterra, and specialized in quality systems. Later I worked as a Quality Manager for the Herd Testing laboratory of LIC, helping develop their documentation and systems to achieve ISO17025 accreditation with IANZ, before I left to have children in 2003. My interest, and skill in my working life was in documenting lab quality systems. This involves procedures, quality records, health and safety systems, staff training and performance assessment. In laboratory businesses, operational manuals and quality records are essential tools for retaining knowledge, training staff, trace-back of information, continuous improvement, and business development. TURNKEY BUSINESS Successful businesses in all sectors document their systems and procedures in order to create a ’turnkey business’. This means they create freedom from all of the day to day tasks of the business, by making it easier for their staff to do them. This allows the business owners and managers time to “work on the business rather than in the business”. Rather than creating work, well planned systems and documentation can create freedom. FARMKEY MANUALS As I became more involved in dairy farm life I was amazed at the breadth of knowledge and skills held by dairy farmers. I’ve learnt so much in the last couple of years, and there is still so much to learn. Farmers manage such a wide range of key farm issues and they have ways they like things to be done on their farm, yet this knowledge and information can be disorganised, and a lot is held in the farmer’s head! I decided that farmers need Farm Manuals, and I created the Farmkey Manual system to make it easier for farmers to produce them. |
